Trad Climbing in Clear Creek Canyon

Overview

Believe it or not, there are actually a few trad classics in Clear Creek Canyon! With Front Range greats of the past like Layton Kor and others, it's safe to assume that a lot of the easier or more classic looking trad lines were climbed long ago, however, there is still loads of potential to be had for those that like to place gear. Below is a list of walls with some routes to keep you busy!

Recommended Trad Areas and Routes in Clear Creek Canyon

Lookout Mountain Crag

This wall has a couple of cracks, including a 5.8 on the right side of the crag that is great for a beginner lead

The Sports Wall

This wall is home to some fun, easy slab routes on the right, and also some more challenging routes on the main wall, Including a classic, Coffin Crack, 5.9.

Stumbling Block

Stumbling Block is home to the trad test-piece, Naked Kill, 5.12d, among a couple others. The Naked Kill can easily be toproped to rehearse the route and gear placements.

Bumbling Stock

Crack a Beer, 5.10+, is a classic offwidth that is sure to satisfy all of those offwidth crushers out there.

Rapids Rock

Wanna try trad climbing directly above the river, here is your chance! Goin' Commando, 5.12b, is a techy and steep trad line that climbs out the steepest section of the wall.

High Wire

High Wire has a few okay trad routes that have bolted anchors. Nothing too good, but it does have some options.

Wall of the 90's

Roadrunner is a tall, classic route that has a little bit of everything as far as sizes. It's also right next door to .30-06, 5.12a, a cool mixed line.

Mission Wall

Gneiss Roof, 5.10, is a great way to seek adventure in the canyon!

Rebel Wall

This is one of the better walls for trad climbing in CCC. Recommended routes are Body English, 5.9, Large Crack, 5.9, and Down to the Wire, 5.11c R.

Prestige Worldwide Wall

You'll find some nice slab cracks here, including a couple of good beginner leads.

Prohibition Pinnacle

You'll find a great jamming testpiece here called Incisor, 5.12a, with two variation finishes to keep you busy.

Little Piece of South Dakota

While there aren't consistent cracks here, a lot of fun can be had with a rack and a rope.

Creekside

Big Bro's Watchin' is a great adventure climb up the most consistent wall on Creekside.
